Although Vera lacks social skills and is a loner, her euthanisation of her controlling and manipulative mother Rita in Season 2 unleashed an ambition in Vera, aligning herself more with Ferguson. When she discovered Ferguson sacrificed her to prisoners during an attempted take-over resulting in her contracting hepatitis C, Vera knew she has to stop Ferguson.
Vera became the new Governor of Wentworth in Season 4.
